How to care for your Merino Wool this winter?

Caring for merino wool is relatively easy, but it requires some attention to ensure it retains its softness, shape, and longevity. Here's a guide on how to care for your merino wool garments:

Read the Label: Always check the care label on your merino wool clothing for specific instructions. Different manufacturers might have slightly different recommendations.

Hand Washing: Hand washing is usually the best method for cleaning merino wool. Use lukewarm water (around 30°C/86°F) and a mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicate. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners as they can damage the wool fibres.

Gentle Washing Machine Cycle: If you prefer using a washing machine, choose the gentle or wool cycle with cold water and a wool-specific detergent. Turn your garment inside out before washing to minimize friction and prevent pilling.

Avoid Agitation: Whether hand washing or using a machine, avoid excessive rubbing, wringing, or agitation, as this can cause the fibres to stretch or felt.

Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse your merino wool garment thoroughly with clean water to remove any detergent residue.

Drying: Lay your merino wool garment flat on a towel to remove excess water. Roll up the towel with the garment inside and gently press to absorb more moisture. Then reshape the garment and lay it flat on a dry towel or drying rack away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid hanging merino wool items when wet, as this can stretch the fabric.

Storage: Store your clean and completely dry merino wool garments folded in a cool, dry place. Avoid hanging them for long periods, as this can cause them to stretch out of shape.

Pilling: Merino wool can sometimes pill, especially in areas of friction. Use a fabric shaver or a sweater stone to gently remove pills. Avoid using scissors, as you may accidentally cut the fabric.

Air Out: Merino wool has natural antibacterial properties that help prevent odour, but if your garment does develop a slight smell, try airing it out in a well-ventilated area rather than washing it unnecessarily.

By following these care instructions, you can help ensure that your merino wool garments remain soft, comfortable, and in great condition for years to come.
